Alaska Railroad Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop
Tuesday, July 20, 2010
When: Tuesday, July 20
Fee: $60 per person
Depart: 9:00 am from Captain Cook Hotel
Return: 7:00 pm to Anchorage

Ride the rail and hit the trail with the Alaska Railroad and the U.S. Forest Service for a truly unique recreational opportunity in the Chugach National Forest. This remote experience is only accessible by way of train. Depart from the historic railroad depot in downtown Anchorage and enjoy a deli-style lunch before arriving at the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. Take a guided hike with a Forest Service Ranger along a fully accessible gravel path with incredible scenic views of Spencer Glacier. For more ambitious trekkers, there is a 3.4-mile trail that takes you right to the face of the glacier. Guests can also stay aboard the train and enjoy more scenery as the Glacier Discovery heads south to Grandview before returning to pick up hikers at the Spencer Whistle Stop. We will return to Portage on the train and depart for Anchorage via motorcoach.

Trip Includes:
  • Roundtrip transportation on the Alaska Railroad and motorcoach
  • Guided hike to Spencer Glacier viewpoint
  • Deli lunch served on board the train
  • Food and beverages available for purchase on the train
  • Water and snacks for the guided hike
Items to bring along:
  • Warm layers, hat and gloves—it can be chilly even if it's sunny!
  • Wind/rain protection
  • Comfortable shoes for guided hike
  • Sun protection—sunglasses, sunscreen, visor or hat
  • Insect repellant
  • Camera and binoculars
If you're interested in doing one of the longer unguided day hikes available from the Whistle Stop, please contact us directly at WAFWA2010@alaska.gov or 267-2800 so we can help ensure you have a safe and fun journey.

Registration deadline for guest activities is June 15th. If space is available, guests may have the opportunity to register at a later date or during the meeting.
