Deer and Elk Workshop

The 13th Biennial Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies Deer and Elk Workshop will be held May 28–31, 2019 at Hotel Saint George in Marfa, TX.  The workshop planning team is developing a very exciting and engaging program with special events to highlight Texas’ hospitality and desert mountains and basins.  The workshop will include a plenary session on the challenges and opportunities of managing deer and elk on private land; sessions on deer and elk research and management; poster session; and several networking opportunities at evening socials and potential management specific breakout sessions.

We invite you to submit abstracts for oral or poster presentations by March 15, 2019.

The host hotel is Hotel Saint George with 45 rooms (36 singles and 9 doubles) available.  Room rates are $94/night.  Ask for the deer and elk workshop room block.

The Hotel Paisano is another hotel available for the workshop with 40 rooms (7 doubles and 33 singles) and within walking distance of the host hotel.  Room rates are $94/night.  

The Riata Inn has 15 rooms (14 doubles and 1 single) reserved for the workshop at $92/night and is less than a mile from the host hotel.  

Other local hotels in Alpine (26 miles east of Marfa on US 90):

The Quarter Circle Seven Hotel has 34 rooms (21 doubles and 13 singles) for $94/night. 

The Hampton Inn has 20 rooms (10 doubles for $104/night and 10 singles for $94/night) available for the workshop..

Other lodging options with GSA rates in Alpine are Holiday Inn Express and Quality Inn.

Bus shuttle service to workshop events will be available for those staying in Alpine.  The bus ride from Alpine to Marfa is about 30 minutes.  Buses will pick up attendees at the Hampton Inn and Quarter Circle 7 hotels.

Directions

Being in a remote region of Texas, the two nearest cities and international airports are in El Paso and Midland.  The El Paso and Midland international airports are both about 190 miles from Marfa.  Marfa does have a municipal airport; however, there are no commuter flights from El Paso or Midland to Marfa. For attendees needing to fly, booking flights to El Paso or Midland and using a car rental service to drive to Marfa is the best option.

Papers and Abstracts (Presentations and Posters)

All papers and abstracts should be written in JWM format.  Abstracts are due by March 15.  Papers for the proceedings are due July 1.

Presentations

Presentations will be 15 minutes with 5 minutes for questions.  Presenters will provide their PowerPoint presentation to respective session’s moderator during the break prior to assigned session.

State & Provincial Status Reports

A representative from each state and province will be sent a questionnaire via email similar to past workshops.  Questionnaires and are due by March 15.  All data from the questionnaires will be compiled for the workshop and presented by Mike Janis.
